My First International Trip...

(A couple of months ago, I devoted considerable time to contemplating how to embark on my blogging journey. Initially, I considered writing about my ongoing research, but I hesitated, feeling it might not be the most captivating starting point. However, everything changed when I chanced upon Prateek's webpage and came across his enthralling blog detailing his first international trip. Inspired by Prateek's words and with the unwavering support and motivation from my friend Pranjal, I finally found the drive to start my own blog๐Ÿ˜)

It was December 2022 when I received an email to attend the 7th Workshop on Algebraic Complexity Theory held at the University of Warwick, UK. The most fabulous thing was that this trip was fully funded. One of the advantages of being involved in academia is the occasional opportunity to enjoy fully funded trips, which can be quite a delightful perk๐Ÿ˜Š

The excitement was palpable as I eagerly planned for my first-ever international trip. The workshop was scheduled for five days, and my friend, Saraswati from IITGN, will be joining me. However, we couldn't resist the allure of London, so we decided to extend our trip and explore the city๐Ÿ˜† We got our visa easily without having any problems. I then started watching videos about the most visited places in London and made a long list of places in my diary✍

Fast forward to March 25th, 2023, the day we embarked on our journey. After a long flight with multiple connections, we arrived in Coventry on the 26th evening. Stepping out of the airport, we were greeted by the chilly weather. A bus strike complicated our transportation plans, and without a UK sim card, booking a cab seemed impossible. Thankfully, we crossed paths with an Indian girl who kindly helped us book a cab. As we drove from Birmingham to Coventry, the picturesque view outside the window left us in awe.

About the Workshop on Algebraic Complexity Theory

The workshop officially began on March 27th. Navigating the local transport system proved challenging, as tapping our cards instead of using cash was a new experience. Nevertheless, we managed to reach the university where the workshop was held.

The workshop was an incredible gathering of brilliant minds from around the world. It provided a platform for researchers, experts, and enthusiasts to delve deep into the fascinating realm of algebraic complexity theory.

Throughout the workshop, we were treated to a series of captivating talks by some of the most esteemed researchers in the field. Moreover, the workshop offered numerous opportunities to connect with world-renowned researchers and experts in algebraic complexity theory. Engaging in conversations and exchanging ideas with these intellectual powerhouses was an invaluable experience. I was able to establish meaningful connections, seek guidance, and gain deeper insights into the latest trends and challenges in the field. The lively discussions during coffee breaks and social events provided a platform to forge new friendships and expand professional networks.

As the workshop progressed, my excitement grew, knowing that I would be presenting my own research on the final day. Delivering a presentation among such esteemed colleagues was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. However, the supportive and collaborative atmosphere encouraged meaningful discussions and constructive feedback, further enhancing my understanding of the subject matter.

Attending the 7th Workshop on Algebraic Complexity Theory was an enriching and enlightening experience. The knowledge gained, connections established, and memories created will undoubtedly shape my academic and professional journey moving forward.

I am immensely grateful to Prof. Christian Ikenmeyer for curating such an exceptional event and providing me with the opportunity to be a part of it. This workshop has undoubtedly deepened my passion for algebraic complexity theory and inspired me to contribute further to this exciting field of research.

Two Days in London๐Ÿ˜Ž

The workshop concluded on March 31st, leaving us with a burning desire to explore the vibrant streets of London. Our return flight was scheduled for the following day, so we had limited time to make the most of this incredible city. Determined to cover as much ground as possible, we hopped on a train from Coventry to London Euston. Unfortunately, delays seemed to follow us, and we arrived in London late at night.

Our gracious host, Akshay, Saraswati's cousin, greeted us at Wembley Park station. We quickly made plans for the next day, eager to delve into London's treasures. We started early, visiting iconic landmarks such as the Clock Tower and the London Eye. The breathtaking view from the London Eye made the ticket price of 40£‎ worthwhile. Buckingham Palace and Hyde Park were next on our list, with their captivating greenery and stunning architecture.

One highlight of our adventure was the Tower Bridge. Standing before this majestic structure, more beautiful than I could have imagined, left me in awe. It was a surreal experience to sail beneath the bridge on a boat, capturing memories that would last a lifetime. As the day drew to a close, we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere of London, feeling grateful for the unforgettable experiences we had encountered.

On the following day, we had hoped to explore the British Museum, but the long queue deterred us. Instead, we wandered through the famous streets of London, such as Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circle, marveling at the bustling atmosphere and vibrant culture. With hunger gnawing at us, we stumbled upon Govindan's restaurant at Soho Street, a haven for delicious Indian cuisine๐Ÿ˜‹

The Unexpected Challenges

So far, everything has gone well. But, the trip is, of course, boring if you don't have adventurous things happen, right? Ours was not boring as the tragedy still remained to happen๐Ÿ˜’

Our return flight was scheduled from Gatwick Airport, located outside London. With one metro and a local train change, it took us almost two hours to reach the airport from Wembley Park. Our adventure took an unexpected turn when we missed the train we were supposed to board. After a prolonged wait, a train finally arrived, but its slow pace filled us with anxiety.

Finally reaching Gatwick Airport at 6:30 PM, we were met with long queues for baggage check-in and security checks. Our hearts raced as we raced through the airport, determined not to miss our flight.

Reflections and Takeaways

Looking back on this whirlwind of a trip, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to attend the workshop and explore the vibrant city of London. The workshop expanded my knowledge and introduced me to valuable connections in my field. London, with its iconic landmarks and rich cultural experiences, will forever hold a special place in my heart.

This trip taught me the importance of adaptability and perseverance when faced with unexpected challenges. It allowed me to step outside my comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and make memories that will last a lifetime. I returned home with a renewed sense of curiosity, eager to embark on future adventures and continue my academic pursuits๐Ÿ˜Š
